Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs
The Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs, Inc. (the ADGAP) is committed to advancing academic geriatrics programs and supporting academic geriatrics program directors in order to benefit and aid patient care, research, and teaching programs in geriatric medicine within accredited medical schools located in the United States. ADGAP has built and fostered new methods of facilitating the development of leadership skills among academic geriatricians and has provided an ongoing forum for Program Directors and leaders in academic geriatrics to discuss the wide variety of issues that they encounter.

The goals of ADGAP are:
- To identify emerging issues and problems pertaining to academic geriatric programs
- To provide a forum to enhance communication among geriatric program leaders
- To serve as a resource for information and data about academic geriatric programs
- To promote the development of academic geriatric programs by assisting established programs as well as emerging programs and program directors
- To issue pertinent policy statements and provide relevant information for influencing the creation of public policy
Brief History
The Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs (ADGAP) was founded in 1990 by a group of twenty leaders in the field of geriatrics who worked to establish this organization in response to the need to stimulate and expand interest in geriatric education and research. Recognizing the need to unify its efforts with those of the American Geriatrics Society, these leaders determined that ADGAP should work within the AGS structure to accomplish its mission. Following the first meeting of Program Directors in Atlanta in 1990, the organization was officially incorporated in 1992. ADGAP is currently a supporting Foundation of the American Geriatrics Society and it works collaboratively with the AGS on public policy advocacy, geriatrics training, and aging research.
ADGAP Staff
Staffing for ADGAP is provided by the AGS Department of Professional Education and Special Projects and is overseen by Nancy E. Lundebjerg, Deputy Executive Vice President and Elvy Ickowicz, Assistant Deputy Executive Vice-President. The AGS Membership Department supports collection of dues and maintenance of the membership database.
Marianna Drootin (mdrootin@americangeriatrics.org) is the lead AGS staffer for ADGAP and is the contact person for the organization. In addition to providing staff support for the ADGAP Board, Ms. Drootin is the lead staffer for ADGAP's grants from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
